13.01.2024 RIMF in Hai Phong

On January 13, 2024, our journey to Vietnam commenced with a visit to the Research Institute for Marine Fishery (RIMF) in Hai Phong. There, the institute was introduced to us and we received a comprehensive briefing on its activities. During this meeting, we discussed how the RIMF could contribute its knowledge and expertise in marine research to the REVFIN project of Ostfalia University.

January 15 to 17, 2024: Conference in Ha Long

Between January 15th and 17th, Ostfalia University in partnership with Nha Trang University hosted an international conference at Ha Long University. The event was graced with the presence of representatives from Ha Long University (HLU), Kien Giang University (KGU), the Vietnam Tuna Association (VINATUNA), and Truong Phat Plastic Company (STP). A co-ordination meeting was held on 15 January to discuss the key aspects of the project and possible changes. This was followed by a roundtable discussion in the afternoon where the project was presented in detail. Participants included senior managers and specialists from various Vietnamese ministries and organisations, as well as representatives from selected districts and key businesses in the fisheries and environment sectors. On 16 January, the focus was on partner presentations, with contributions from NTU, HLU, KGU, RIMF and VinaTuna. The partners presented the results of surveys conducted with fishermen on the management of used nets. On 17 January, Ostfalia University presented a series of lectures. The team introduced the topic of plastics recycling and gave an insight into the European practice of disposing of fishing gear. Customised learning modules developed for international scientists conducting research in Germany were also presented. The latest machine technologies used at the university were also presented. The event ended with a discussion on media strategies to publicise the project to a wider audience. On 18 January 2024, we went on an excursion to the port of Cai Rong in the Van Don district. This gave us valuable insights into the local harbour industry and the production and repair of nets. On 19 January 2024, our trip was enriched by a visit to the picturesque Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Vietnam’s most prestigious tourist destinations. The excursion culminated on 20 January with a tour of the historic old town of Hanoi around Hoan Kiem Lake, which was a perfect end to our insightful and successful business trip. Our trip not only helped to deepen existing partnerships, but also laid the foundations for new opportunities for cooperation. It was an important step towards promoting international dialogue and cooperation in maritime research and environmental technology.
